David Francis
Beacon & Bents
David Francis became South Tyneside’s first Green Party councillor when he was elected to represent Beacon & Bents Ward in May 2019. He was re-elected in 2023 and is now Leader of the Opposition on South Tyneside Council.
“I was interested in politics from a very early age – two of my childhood heroes were Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King! Despite this, it wasn’t until 2010 that I decided to become actively involved in local campaigning, which led me to joining the Green Party a few years later. I’m very proud to call South Shields home and to represent the community as a local councillor.”
David is currently Co-Chair of the Association of Green Councillors and has written for Bright Green and Green World
David holds regular surgeries at Ocean Road Community Centre.

South Tyneside Green Party condemns Sycamore Gap vandalism
Leader of the Opposition and Green Party councillor for Beacon and Bents ward in South Tyneside said,
“I’m shocked and disappointed to hear the news today of the felling of the iconic tree at Sycamore Gap in Northumberland. There has been an outpouring of outrage and distress from right across the North East and beyond. It’s only right that people feel very strongly about this and recognise it as a terrible act of vandalism and mindless destruction.
It’s also a wake-up call about damage being done to trees across our region and beyond every single day – not just in places like Sycamore Gap, but in our neighbourhoods, towns and communities – those trees need our protection too’.
