2024 Local Election Candidates

 South Tyneside Green Party

Beacon & Bents

Beacon & Bents

Sue Stonehouse

I was born in South Shields and am passionate about improving the lives of residents, bringing communities together and providing a safer environment. As councillor for the past 3 years, I have a track record of working hard for the people of Beacon and Bents alongside my fellow Green councillors David Francis and Sarah McKeown. We stay connected to our community all year round, working with individuals, families, community groups and local businesses on a daily basis with issues from cost of living worries to help with housing, anti social behaviour and so much more. I also speak up in the Council chamber for the people I represent – making sure we get a fair deal for our area and the resources we need to tackle issues and improve our day to day lives. Please re-elect me on May 2nd so that I can continue to put Beacon and Bents first.

John Chilton

Born in the North East, I’ve been a resident of South Tyneside since 1996.

I have always worked in the IT sector and I am currently employed by Barbour in South Shields.

I’ve always had a strong interest in the environment and climate change and with more and more people across South Tyneside voting Green than ever before, I believe that the Green Party is a positive voice for you in the town hall.

We can win and I believe that we should be pushing hard for Green jobs in South Tyneside whilst improving the environment for future generations.

Biddick and All Saints

Biddick and All Saints

Chris Davies

My name is Chris Davies and I’m standing to be ward councillor in Biddick and All Saints. Last year saw the historic election of Rachael Milne as the first elected green councillor for the ward. Since then I have been working alongside her, hearing from residents and taking action on their priorities – particularly getting the streets cleaned and empowering residents in the fight against antisocial behaviour. From speaking with residents across the ward, I’ve also identified something from my own personal experience, of the difficulty getting to and from our hospitals via public transport, something I wish to campaign for significant improvements if elected. I pledge to listen to your concerns and always do what is right for our ward. Please vote for me in the local elections on May 2nd.
Boldon Colliery

Boldon Colliery

Darius Seago

I joined The Green Party because I want change in South Tyneside and believe that the local Green Party can help South Tyneside grow economically while maintaining and protecting the green spaces we currently have. I hope I can be an alternative voice in the council for the people of Boldon Colliery, I promise I will work for you and listen to your concerns. For the past few years, I’ve been supporting several campaigns in the local area, and I only supported these because I can see all of these other Green Party candidates care about the residents and the local area.
Cleadon Park

Cleadon Park

John Riley

The past year has been really hard for everyone, especially with the rising cost of living. I am proud to be able to help our community by volunteering with Beach Access North East.

I was previously a volunteer with a local foodbank. I was also a marshall at the three Covid vaccination sites across South Tyneside until the programme ended in December 2022. I have lived in Cleadon Park for the past 7 years, so I am aware of issues faced by the local community.

More and more people tell us that they’re voting Green this year. We are the second largest party represented in the town hall.
Our Green Group of councillors work hard to make positive change across our borough and challenge the Labour-run council on their poor decision making.

Please consider voting Green on May 2nd

Cleadon and East Boldon

Cleadon and East Boldon

Rhiannon Curtis

I am out and about in Cleadon and East Boldon every week, speaking to residents about the issues which matter most. This has led to me taking action on behalf of residents to successfully resolve issues such as anti-social behaviour, speeding, and inadequate street, road, and green-space maintenance. I am deeply committed to working hard to improve our area, and, regardless of election outcome, will continue to do so.

Should I be elected, I would join our Green councillors David Herbert and Shirley Ford who are standing up for the green belt. Unlike Labour councillors, who regardless of their personal convictions, are obligated to vote along party lines, I could and would vote to protect our area from inappropriate and ill-considered development.

If I am voted in on the 2nd of May, I would continue to hard work for the benefit of the residents of Cleadon and East Boldon.

Fellgate and Hedworth

Fellgate and Hedworth

Nic Cook

I am committed to making South Tyneside a fair and more equal place for us to live, work and play. As a parent and disabled person, I am passionate about fair access to work and housing, and community health and wellbeing. We deserve to have clean air, and access to green spaces and to leave a healthy planet for future generations. As a Green Party candidate, I can be a positive voice for our community and make sure local people’s voices are heard on the issues important to them, such as the community-led Save the Fellgate Green Belt campaign. Voting Green can make a massive difference to our community.

Harton

Harton

Colin Tosh

I work as a researcher in Environmental Science at the University of Newcastle and am married with two young children. If elected, I will work to maintain strong public health services and transport. I believe in supporting small business because small business serves the local community and profits stay within the local community. I will also prioritise the safeguarding and development of green and leisure spaces to improve the quality of life for residents. Vote Green on May 2nd for a strong, independent voice for Harton.
Horsley Hill

Horsley Hill

Carrie Richardson

I am really pleased to be the Green Party candidate for Horsey Hill; having grown up in the area and living in South Shields my whole life.

I have a good understanding of the strengths of the local community as well as the challenges they face too. My background is in working in the charitable sector so I have a lot of experience and understanding of working alongside communities that need support and development. The area is already lucky enough to sit within our outstanding coastline and I will work hard to support local residents to make the changes that they feel are important to create long-term improvement and happiness in Horsley Hill.

Hebburn North

Hebburn North

Annette Chapman

It has been both a privilege and an honour to have served the people of South Tyneside for over 43 years as a nurse and a midwife, and more recently as a primary school teacher specialising in safeguarding, special educational needs and disabilities, and child mental health.  I have also been a respite foster carer. I have a solid knowledge of the day-to-day lives, the strengths and struggles of the people here.

I have, for many years, been committed to keeping our streets, roads, parks and beautiful spaces clean, healthy and safe for the benefit of pedestrians, road users and wildlife. I believe we deserve a better quality of life and general wellbeing, especially those who are experiencing long-term and short-term vulnerability.

I hope to be a strong voice and campaigner for Hebburn North. It’s time for change. Vote Green.

Hebburn South

Hebburn South

Briony Sommers

I am proud to stand as a Green Party candidate and represent my community in Hebburn South.

I believe that every person deserves access to clean air, green spaces and affordable housing.

I am passionate about ensuring that our community is inclusive, diverse and welcoming to all, and I will strive to make sure that every resident’s voice is heard.

Together, we can create a brighter future for ourselves and for generations to come.

Vote for me to disrupt the status-quo in South Tyneside Council. In power since 1979, the Labour party have become complacent and take your vote for granted. For the last ten years, the Green Party have been consistently engaging with local communities in South Tyneside and filling the void left by absent Labour councillors. In 2019, we were privileged that local residents in South Shields voted in their first Green councillor and since then, communities across the borough have entrusted us to hold the council to account. We now have nine councillors and form the main opposition party in the Council. For the first time in 40 years, the people of South Tyneside have the opportunity for change, for something new and fresh. Let’s blow away the cobwebs in the council and bring new life to our region.
Primrose

Elaine Francis

I’m proud to have been selected as your candidate in the local election.

I’ve seen how negative local politics is becoming and I believe it can be different – for our communities and our environment.
Greens are the only ones offering positive solutions to issues the people of Primrose and South Tyneside face. Our Green group of 9 councillors are the official opposition in the Town Hall, recently putting forward their first alternative budget, something no other opposition councillors have done for many years. Proposing a saving on Council Tax and more money spent on the things you tell us matter to you, like better resourced street cleaning, increased CCTV to tackle ongoing issues around anti-social behaviour and fly-tipping, nature recovery and more.

If elected on May 2nd, I promise to be a new, fresh and positive voice for you.

Bethany Telford

I joined the Greens because I believe in grassroots politics. I believe our communities should be heard and action taken. I promise to work hard all year around to listen to the residents and improve our borough. I feel that the Labour group don’t listen to the people anymore and often expect to win. They’ve become complacent. Greens work hard all year around and it shows, more and more people across South Tyneside vote Green – we now have 9 councillors and are Official Opposition! A vote for me will mean more Greens in the council chamber, making a real difference in our community.

West Park

West Park

Nicky Gynn

I am passionate about our environment, locally and globally. I believe everyone should have access to health care, education and support services, and that we all have the right to live in a clean, safe environment, to access public transport, free from harassment. I believe in working together as a community. During my working life I supported children, young people and families to overcome barriers to education, helping them achieve qualifications to be able to move on to training and work. Following retirement, I volunteered for The Red Cross, and with a domestic violence team. For the past 4 years I have campaigned for the Green Party and work hard alongside West Park councillors Andrew Guy and Jim Yare, who have given me a greater insight into what it is like to be a councillor. I hope that I will have the privilege of representing the residents here.
Westoe

Westoe

Georgie Holt

I’m proud to be the Green Party candidate for Westoe. Many people tell me that they feel the Labour Party has taken our communities for granted for far too long. They seem to have stopped listening to local people and have become complacent. The cost of living crisis, made worse by the worrying rises in fuel costs, means that local people are really struggling. Greens have already demonstrated that they speak up for people and put ideas and policies forward which benefit all. Westoe needs someone who puts the people first, not the interests of a party or themselves. I will always put our community first. Better is possible. Please vote Green on May 2nd.
Whitburn and Marsden

Whitburn and Marsden

Edward Littley

I moved to South Tyneside in recent years and I am proud to not only live in Whitburn and Marsden but to have the opportunity to stand for the Green Party here. Our coastline and environment are unique and I would work hard to ensure that attention and focus is given to these areas so our future generations have every chance to enjoy the landscape that we have today. I would make every effort to hold the council accountable for any decisions made and make sure that your voice as a resident is heard. Please consider making a change and voting Green on May 2nd

Sophie-Jane Williams

I am proud to stand for Green Party and stand for what I believe in. I have lived in South Tyneside since birth with a family who has lived here for many generations. I have seen the effects of climate change and seen the problems caused by a lack of funding for things like hospitals and education facilities. As a 24 year old, I want to be a voice for everyone, for the generations older than me who have lived here for years and the generations yet to come, to create a viable future for South Tyneside. A vote for Green is a vote for the things that really matter.
